Stargate Universe, Not Dead Yet!

The SyFy channel stupidly, did not renew Stargate Universe for a third season. When I heard the news the first thing to cross my  mind was the outrage from Stargate's vast fan base and that the producers of the show wouldn't give up and find another network for the next season. That's what's happening now. There's a save Stargate Campaign brewing and executive producer Joseph Mallozi said this recently on his blog:

“Nothing definite as of yet to report but a minor hurdle was cleared,” Mallozzi states in the blog.  “Quite a few hurdles still lie ahead and there’s always the chance it might all be for naught – but right now, things are looking positive.”

Season two of Stargate Universe will start again with episode 11 on April 2nd, and will apparently be it's final run on the SyFi Channel. I really hope the people at SyFy would just pull their heads out of their asses and sign the show for as many season as it takes to finish the story for this second series spin off of Stargate.

Also, they should change their channel's name back to "Sci-Fi" do they really think changing it to SyFy gives the channel more appeal? Who exactly are they trying to appeal to? The other show's I've seen clips of (and have zero interest in) seem to fit better in the fantasy genre, not having much to do with true science fiction.  I want to see weird aliens, epic space battles, and strange planets. In case you haven't figured it out, The Stargate saga is my all time favorite science fiction story.

I started watching the original series "SG-1" in 2005. KCAL 9 used to air reruns of the show late nights around 11:00pm. I quickly became a fan. SG-1 ran for 10 seasons, could have gone longer but the producers wanted to continue the story with "Stargate Atlantis which ran for 5 seasons. Both we're excellent. There are 2 Stargate SG-1 movies made after the series that kick ass too. What got me hooked on Stargate was the mix of real science with fiction and the way they would use earth's mythology and history in the story lines. SG-1 was almost educational really. There wasn't as much human drama or in depth character building as "Atlantis" or "Universe". Every show was pretty much about Col. Jack O'Neil (Richard Dean Anderson, AKA "MacGyver") and the rest of SG-1, walking through the stargate to different planets in the Milky Way galaxy and kicking the shit out of any oppressive Goa'uld Lord that got int the way. Freeing the slaves, uniting them against the Lords while, trying to convince more advanced Utopian societies to help and give them bigger guns and technology to fight. There was a lot more action and less talk.

In almost all science fiction movies Extra Terrestrials are depicted in a negative light, coming to earth only to destroy everything and kill us all. They usually look like evil monsters, not human. One of the most positive things about all the Stargate series is that their enemies, the bad Aliens like the Goa'uld, Ori, Replicators, Wraith, are a minority in the galaxies. Using superior technology to fool them, they claim and appear to be all powerful to their subjects, who think they must be divine to have such "magic". The Stargate teams go around exposing their tricks and uniting the common people against them to fight back.

Stargate Universe is based on the story about the Human Ancients that invented the Stargate millions of years ago. They became so advanced that they abandoned all technology and learned how to ascend to a higher plane. Apparently they had some enemies back then, in the show they find the aftermath of large battles that took place. They sent out the star ship Destiny, with other stargate seed ships to explore the far reaches of the universe leaving a network of stargates along the way. Maybe as a fail safe in the face of annihilation by their enemies or just to preserve a legacy for their descendants, the Atlantians and Earth people.

I like the current story so far, there's more drama and romance than the other series but they work it into the whole story decently. The set design and special effects are awesome.    Stargate has a solid world-wide fan base. I'm sure the producers will find a new network to air it, maybe SyFy will renew it's contract after the second season ratings come in. There's  probably going to be a lot more people watching after hearing all the cancellation hype.

There's an online petition to keep Startgate on the air and if you want to let them know people are still watching play the episodes on the SyFy Channel's website.
